What is Project Based Home Learning?

Students are given project style assignments to complete over an extended period of time (usually 6 weeks) that allow them to develop their response in ways best suited to their learning preferences.

Assignments are designed to reflect the needs of the various KS3 subject curricula, but are not solely content based. Development of student learning skills and personal organisation is also a key focus.

How is Project Based Home Learning Organised?

A KS3 schedule is issued in consultation with staff at all levels. This schedule is made available for parents and is displayed in each Curriculum and College area. It is imperative that each department is aware of their slots in the schedule and plan accordingly to ensure that assignments are distributed on time, monitored during the process and are collected in on time.  Feedback to students should be provided within a short time frame and assignments worth a commendable mention are promoted with Assemblies.

Who is involved?

Distinct responsibilities rest with Subject Teachers, Curriculum Leaders, Tutors and Heads of College.

Subject Teachers are required to:

  • contribute their ideas towards the development of each task.
  • ensure that assignment sheets are distributed at the earliest opportunity to their classes.
  • allocate sufficient time in lessons to discuss the development of the task with students.
  • provide necessary resources, or direct students towards appropriate resources to help complete the task.
  • utilise appropriate methods of monitoring to ensure that assignments are submitted for marking on time.
  • provide appropriate written and verbal feedback to students within a reasonable period of time.
  • administer necessary Justice proceedings for students who do not complete the task (or who have not made sufficient progress when work is monitored).
  • recommend students work to be featured at Assemblies.
  • reward students work using the VIVO system.

Curriculum Leaders are required to:

  • finalise the development and presentation of each Home Learning assignment.
  • ensure that assignments are distributed by their team in line with the Home Learning schedule.
  • ensure that work is monitored, collected and marked appropriately.
  • support subject teachers in implementing sanctions where appropriate and contacting parents of students who do not complete their assignments.
  • select appropriate assignments to showcase at Assemblies, organising students (and staff) to present their work and recognise what has been learned through the process.
  • organise appropriate rehearsals in the Hall to ensure students are comfortable with their presentation; that they can be heard and that work to be displayed can be seen by all.

Tutors are required to:

  • support their colleagues and students by discussing current Home Learning assignments.
  • display the Home Learning schedule in the tutor base.
  • check students planners to ensure that assignments are recorded.
  • help support students organisational skills by allocating certain tutor periods to work on these tasks.
  • communicate with parents, enlisting their support with the development of their students work.

Head of College are required to:

  • have an awareness of the demands of the Home Learning schedule and use opportunities in tutor periods and assembly to promote achievement in these areas.
  • respond to parental enquiries and concerns appropriately by making the tutor, curriculum leader and teacher aware.
  • support the celebration of achievement in Assemblies.
  • develop the KS3 Home Learning schedule and make this information available.
  • liase with Curriculum Leaders to ensure that the schedule is adhered to.
  • schedule and facilitate the Home Learning Projects are promoted in Assemblies.

How is Project Based Home Learning Assessed?

Students work should be marked in accordance with subject KS3 descriptors and levelled appropriately.  It is imperative that work is marked and returned to students within a reasonable time frame.  Appropriate written and verbal feedback should be provided in line with the Academy marking policy.  Curriculum Leaders should ensure that marking across the team is consistent.  Reference to student performance in Home Learning assignments is a requirement of student progress reviews and written reports.

How are Home Learning Achievements Recognised?

Students producing work of an excellent standard should be awarded VIVO points in accordance with the Academy reward system.  Exceptional performance by students should be displayed in classrooms and recommended for display across the Academy.  Such performance may be used by departments when selecting students for recognition at any Celebration Event.
