Our Approach to Learning
Art is taught by following the basic elements of drawing, developing skills and techniques. Students are encouraged to create a personal response to the work set.
Curriculum
Key Stage 3
Art is a subject in which students are encouraged to express themselves through a range of mediums and methods. Students attend three lessons per fortnight. They are taught in mixed ability groups and complete a different topic each term which meets the National Curriculum requirements. Topics covered include Natural Forms, Hybrids, Costume, Ndebele, Patterns, Architecture, Contemporary Artist, Pop Art, Bugs and Butterflies Cubism. Students have opportunities to learn about different cultures and environments to produce work in a variety of styles and sizes.
Key Stage 4
Students who have chosen to study Art in Key Stage 4 will follow the Edexel exam board for BTEC First Extended Certificate in Art and Design. They attend 6 sessions over the two week period and are taught in mixed ability option groups.
The programme of study involves the undertaking of three units of work all of which are coursework based and include visual communication and development of skills and techniques.
Extra Curricular Activities
Students will be invited to participate in extra curricular work and visits to places of interest (there may be a small charge for this). Students will study a variety of genres, cultures and artists and are encouraged to develop individual ideas and responses to these as part of their assessed work.
BTEC/Key Stage 4 enrichment classes on a Tuesday.
Key Stage 3 enrichment classes are on a Thursday.
16 Year 9 students work with an artist in residence in creating large puppets and take part in the Roald Dahl Festival every year.
