Our Approach to Learning

The department, though its scheme of work and lesson planning, aims to use a wide range of teaching styles in order to meet the diverse needs of our students.  Beginning in Year 7, our intention is to build upon previous knowledge and skills so that students will eventually become independent learners able to access and challenge information for themselves.

Department Structure

The Geography Department is led by the Curriculum Leader of the Humanities Faculty (History, Geography, Sociology and Religious Studies), Mr K Thomas, and is line managed by the Head of Nobel College, Mr D Burns.

Curriculum

  • In Year 7, students are introduced to the study of Geography and then focus on the Geography of the UK – Population, Weather and Climate, Settlements, the Olympics and our local area.
  • In Year 8 a wider outlook is taken and students examine Ecosystems, Development and Tectonics.
  • For Year 9 there is a global emphasis and students study Tourism, Environmental Issues and New Global Superpowers.
  • At Key Stage 4 we follow the OCR B Geography syllabus.  This provides coverage of 4 main subject areas – Population and Settlement, Rivers and Coasts, Economic Development and Natural Hazards.

The Geography Department also offers Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism.  In the Sixth Form the syllabus followed at AS level is Edexcel AS Geography.

Extra Curricular Activities

The department offers revision sessions to Year 10 and 11 students when needed.  There have also been coursework-based visits to the local area as well as Travel and Tourism trips to Littlehampton, Oxford and Aylesbury Tourist Information Centre.
