Homework and home learning can provide an excellent opportunity for parents and carers to become actively involved in their children's learning, giving them a window on Academy work. Increasing recognition has been given to the role of parents and carers as co- educators of their children and The Academy can do a great deal to help to involve parents in homework and home learning by:
- being aware of, and sensitive towards, children's home backgrounds and taking these into account in shaping both the nature of homework tasks and the resources that are required for their completion.
- providing a positive approach and constructive alternatives for students who need special help to enable them to work well.
KEY STAGE 3 –– YEARS 7, 8 AND 9
Unless specifically stated by the Curriculum Leader for the individual subject, The Academy will follow the Department for Children, Schools and Families weekly recommended guidelines. They are as follows:
- Years 7 and 8: between 45 and 90 minutes per day during term time
- Year 9: between 1 and 2 hours per day during term time
Curriculum Leaders do have the choice in Key Stage 3 to offer an extended project, over a six week period, as an alternative to the weekly guided hours provided that the hours devoted to the project are not less than the recommended hours over the year.
Information on project based homework can be found here.
KEY STAGE 4 –– YEARS 10 AND 11
The Academy will follow the Department for Children, Schools and Families weekly recommended guidelines. They are as follows:
- Years 10 and 11: between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per day during term time
There will be no option for project-based homework unless the course curriculum itself dictates another way of working.
Key Stage 5 – Years 12 and 13
There are recommendations set by the Department for Education in Years 12 and 13. There is a considerable movement towards private study and research. These years are a 'bridge' towards degree level study where students may only receive a few hours teaching per week and they are expected to spend much of their time working independently. Curriculum Leaders set their own home learning guidelines, but essay writing subjects tend to have longer private study tasks.
