The School regards ICT education as a priority, both within ICT classes and across the spectrum of academic subjects. Teaching is supported by excellent facilities, which include fully networked rooms. The skills students develop in ICT will certainly prove useful in other subjects, colleges, universities and the world of work.

Our Approach to Learning

Our aim is to encourage and develop competent students who gain confidence and are able to believe in their own ability, whether it be technology or any other curricular subject.

Building upon the skills learnt in Years 7, the majority of the time students will be involved in practical tasks that contribute to the vital coursework portfolio, but also allow them to increase their knowledge about ICT. Students will be encouraged to develop solutions to problems and solve them by using appropriate applications and skills.

Department Structure

Curriculum

Key Stage 3

In Years 7 all students have dedicated lessons, in which core ICT skills are covered in line with the national curriculum.

Key Stage 4

ICT

At Key Stage 4, starting in year 8, students will be undertaking the OCR Nationals ICT course, which will result in between 1 and 4 GCSE equivalent qualifications. There is no exam for this course; it is assessed on the coursework produced by the students. There are a number of units to complete. The units include spreadsheets, databases, video and sound editing, creating animations and web pages. This course will give students a good grounding to move on to the A' level ICT course if they choose.

Business Studies

At Key Stage 4, students also have a choice of studying Business Studies, working towards a BTEC qualification which is equivalent to two GCSEs. This course is assessed on coursework, there is no exam, and it will give students a good grounding to move on to the A' level Business Studies course if they choose.

Extra Curricular Activities

After school homework and coursework sessions are available every evening in Room 15. This allows the weaker students to gain extra one to one sessions and the more able students to further their knowledge and skills.
