academy student wins top scholarship

July 2011

An Aylesbury Vale Academy student will soon be embarking on a two year business enterprise degree programme after winning a scholarship to study at the University of Buckingham.

Budding businessman Andrew McIntrye, 18, will have his fees paid to study for a BSc Business Enterprise honours degree from January 2012. He will be starting and running his own business as an integral part of his honours degree course.

Aylesbury Vale District Council offers this two-year scholarship, worth about £18,000, as part of its programme to encourage entrepreneurs and small business growth. The scholarship competition is open to all Aylesbury Vale residents and successful applicants are invited to pitch a new business proposal to the “Buckingham Angels” venture capital panel.

On winning this year’s scholarship Andrew, a Year 13 student at the Aylesbury Vale Academy, said: “I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to study at the University of Buckingham. Without this scholarship I wouldn’t be able to attend university. I hope that AVDC will be able to provide this opportunity to others in the future.”

Councillor Michael Edmonds, Deputy Leader of AVDC and Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “Andrew is a very capable young man, a worthy winner of the competition and someone whom we are sure will be a credit to the University of Buckingham Business School. We are confident that he will be part of a new generation of local entrepreneurs setting up new businesses and growing them in the Vale over the coming years. Sponsoring the competition is just one of the ways we’re encouraging entrepreneurs and small business growth in the Vale.”

Nigel Adams, Programme Director at the University of Buckingham Business School, added: “We are very pleased that Andrew has won the scholarship. AVDC has given an excellent candidate the opportunity to study for an honours degree and start their own business in the district.”
