academy skill force students...
go raft building!
6 October 2010
On Wednesday 6th October, 20 year 10 Academy students went raft building at Waterland Activities Centre in the Cotswold Water Park. They participated in this adventurous activity as part of their Skill Force program where they are working towards the Wider Key Skills award which will assist them in entering education, employment and training on leaving school. The challenge was to work with others to build a raft and paddle it around the lake!

The students watched a safety demonstration on knot tying and learnt how to use the logs and barrells effectively before they set to work themselves. The lake was heated to only 11 degrees so it was crucial to have a stable, solid raft that would last out under the stresses of wind and waves whilst carrying 10 people on each raft!
The students researched in advance what knots they would use and what design they wanted for their raft so that on the day they could take to it like ducks to water! The end results were two solid rafts made and successfully paddled around the lake with great fun had by all!
