Our Approach to Learning

In our department we develop and encourage participation in all physical activity by providing a safe, challenging and competitive environment.  We also work towards providing all students with the tools and knowledge to live a lifelong active and healthy lifestyle.

Department Structure

  • Subject Leader of PT

  • School Sports Co-ordinator

  • 4 Subject Teachers.

Curriculum

Members of the PT Department are very motivated and committed to providing all students with a high quality PT experience throughout their time at The Aylesbury Vale Academy.  The members of staff all strive to continually find and develop new methods of teaching and learning in order to help further involve students in their learning.

The KS3 Curriculum offers a wide range of activities covering all aspects of the National Curriculum.  All year groups are set by ability in order to provide the greatest opportunity for individual development in each activity.  Year 7 groups undergo a program of baseline assessment for a half term in form groups.  This assessment is used to help determine the best opportunities for the students.  Sports covered in KS3 include Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Dodgeball, Fitness, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Rugby, Outdoor Adventures, Rounders.

The KS4 Curriculum is broken into two main areas; BTEC Sport (Diploma and Certificate), and Core Activities. Please see the brochure below for more details. We also offer a KS5 Level 3 course in BTEC Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness).

The BTEC Diploma is a practical and theoretical based course that results in students finishing with up to a maximum of 4 GCSE’s.  The BTEC  Certificate is a similar course but worth 2 GCSE grades.

The core activity group have three lessons fortnightly during which they select activities they wish to participate in.  Part of the course will be dedicated to traditional activities.  However, we are also developing links with local organisations in order to take trips to experience less traditional activities.
