Our Approach to Learning

The learning experience of the individual student is at the heart of what we do.  Students are taught in ability groups where lessons are expected to be exciting and stimulating so that students make progress both during lessons and over the school year as a whole.  As a result, we take a rigorous approach to teaching and learning, preparation, assessment and tracking students’ progress.

Department Structure

The Department is part of the Humanities Curriculum Area, and has two specialist RS teachers.

Curriculum

Religious Studies is taught as a distinct subject throughout the school with students receiving two lessons per fortnight in Years 7 to 11.  At the end of Year 11, all students sit an exam in RS which is worth half a GCSE from WJEC on Religion and Life.   There is also an opportunity to gain a full GCSE in Religious Studies, when students follow the Edexcel course focussing on Christianity and Islam.

There are three units of work for each year at Key Stage 3, during which we cover the beliefs and teachings of the six major world religions, but with an emphasis on Christianity.  As students progress through the school the focus of study changes from beliefs to ethical and moral issues.  Our schemes of work all run in line with the Buckinghamshire Agreed Syllabus.

We offer an AS Level in Religious Studies, from the WJEC exams board, when students follow the topics: Religion in the Contemporary World and The Old Testament, which has proved popular with our sixth form students.
