Introduction

The Academy wants our students to fulfil their fullest potential, both at school and beyond.

For students who are considering university, please find the reources below to help in the decision process.

Parent Guide 2013

The Parent Guide is designed for parents, grandparents and carers of students who are planning to enter higher education in 2013. The guides are free of charge and can be ordered as follows and will be available shortly from the Academy. Please contact Mrs E Perrin if you wish to have a copy.

There is also a designated parents’ section on the main UCAS website at www.ucas.com/parents which includes:

  • Useful information for parents and carers wherever they are in their journey to higher education.
  • Clear guidelines about the UCAS application process; weighting up the options and top tips on how parents can help their son/daughter through what can be a very daunting and stressful time.
  • If parents/carers register, they will receive a free copy of the Parent Guide and regular e-newsletters which provide news and information relevant to the key points in the application cycle.

ucas - short introduction

An important part of a students UCAS application is their Personal Statement.

Students have been provided with a Personal Statement pack, which gives guidance on how to plan and write a Personal Statement. A UCAS Guide for Parents has also been provided. Further copies of these guides are available if required.

This is one of the most important decisions a student will ever make and there is plenty of information and guidance available to help make the right decision.

Students, Parents and Carers are encouraged to visit the UCAS website on www.ucas.ac.uk where the application process is explained in detail. If you would like the UCAS application explained in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs E Perrin, Post-16 and Student Progression Manager at the Academy on 01296 428551.

ucas - Applicant information

The following advice is for Post-16 students who have applied for university places:

Reminder to Students Regarding Decisions

Universities send their application decisions at different times. As all our Post-16 UCAS applications were in by 15 January 2012, students will hear from all their choices by 10 May 2012. Decisions from universities and colleges can be seen on the online Track service. Please use this service and the important dates page for more information.

Course Fees

It is important that students are aware of the course fees they will be charged for the courses they are applying to. This information is provided by institutions and is visible through Course Search. It is particularly important that students check the financial implications of moving between countries in the UK and that they obtain up-to-date information. Please ensure that students take the time to look at this information together with the general information about student finance on the UCAS website.

Invitations for interviews, auditions, additional essays or tests

Students are reminded to make their replies to invitations as quickly as possible.

A university or college is able to send invitations to applicants online through Track. They have an opportunity to accept, decline, or request an alternative time and date. If they need to change the date they should log in to their applications in Track and go to the Choices page to request an alternative date. They need to liaise direct with the university or college for a new date or time.

Students will receive notification that a change has occurred on their application and should be vigilant in replying to the invitation as soon as possible. In Track, they should go to Choices, click on the course code and the opportunity to reply to their invitation decision will be available.

ACTION REQUIRED

Students are reminded to reply as soon as they can, or by the specified time where given as part of the offer by the university or college. If they don’t reply, for whatever reason, the offer could be withdrawn.

UCAS - Invitation Decisions

Please ensure you are replying to any invitation decisions shown on Track. This may be a request to attend an interview or audition or provide a piece of work. The invitation details are shown on Track by clicking into the course and applicants must reply with one of the three options: Accept, Decline or Request a New Date.

UCAS - Telephone Number

If you wish to speak to UCAS directly, please call 0871 468 0 468.

UCAS Extra - 24 February 2012

UCAS Extra is available from 24 February 2012 and is for students who have used all five choices on their application but are holding no offers – you may have been unsuccessful or may have declined offers. Extra gives you the chance to maintain your motivation by adding additional choices, one at a time, before Clearing. Extra is applicant driven and all choices are made through the online Track service. Last year over 9,500 applicants obtained a place in higher education through Extra.

Courses that have places available may be selected from 24 February 2012 in Course Finder (as a search option) or in Course Search (where courses with Extra places available are marked with an ‘x’). Not all courses are available in Extra and applicants should research availability not only through the UCAS website but also directly with universities and colleges.

More information is available at www.ucas.com/students/offers/extra.

UCAStv can be found on the student page and shows applicants how to use Extra.

Oxford Brookes University- Unipod Resource

Oxford Brookes University has developed the Unipod, a resource pack and website about higher education for students, teachers and Parents/Carers.

Unipod provides information and advice to help young people make decisions about university covering topics such as choosing a course, writing personal statements and student finance.

Oxford Brooks University has developed a website for students and parents/carers to access information directly at www.unipodadvice.com.

UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITY FAIR, LONDON – 11 MARCH 2012

The QS World University Tour Undergraduate Fair takes place in London on Sunday, 11 March 2012. The fair will be held at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre SW1P 3EE (nearest tube station is Westminster or St James Park) and runs from 1.00pm until 5.00pm.

There will be over 30 of the world’s top universities, from both the UK and abroad exhibiting at the fair looking to talk with students interested in higher education. A seminar programme on the day will be run on topics such as applying to a top UK institution, studying abroad and funding/scholarships advice. Full details of this year’s exhibitors and seminar programme will be published in due course.

The fair is free to attend but students must register their details at: www.topuniversities.com/londonfair. Parents and carers are more than welcome to visit with their children, there is no need for them to register their details.

In addition, there is also a facebook event page about the fair students are encouraged to visit which offers the latest information about the fair. The website address for this is www.topuniversities.com/fb_london.
