World Challenge Borneo – Turtle Conservation
Last week, our World Challenge team completed what was undoubtedly one of the highlights of their Borneo adventure – an unforgettable turtle conservation project!
The students got hands-on from the start, helping to change the sand in the turtle nursery, where they discovered 16 hatchlings ready to be released into the sea. Later, during a night patrol, they were lucky enough to witness four mother turtles laying their eggs on the beach, before helping the ranger carefully transfer the eggs to the nursery to protect them from predators and poachers.
And the hatchlings kept coming! Another 72 turtles emerged that evening, followed by an incredible 104 more on their final day – meaning the team helped release 192 baby turtles into the sea during their time at the project.
The experience wasn’t just about turtles. Jungle treks brought sightings of long-tailed macaques swinging through the trees, sleeping birds, spiders and some poisonous centipedes – which everyone wisely kept their distance from!
The students also took part in a beach litter pick. They were genuinely shocked by the amount of rubbish they found, prompting conversations about the changes they could make themselves when they returned home.
A truly special few days combining conservation, wildlife and hands-on learning – and an experience we’re sure our students will remember for a very long time.
