Winners of History Competition Trip to the British Museum
Year 7 students had a fantastic visit to the British Museum this week and represented the school exceptionally well throughout the day. We were especially proud to receive compliments from members of the public during the journey about their excellent behaviour and conduct.
The highlight of the trip was seeing the Bayeux Tapestry, which was an incredible experience and will greatly support students with their upcoming assessment. During our additional time in the museum, students also explored a remarkable range of objects from across the ancient world. These included the Rosetta Stone, the colossal statue of Ramesses II from Luxor, which inspired discussion of Shelley’s Ozymandias, and the Assyrian reliefs from Nineveh, where students learned about the world’s first great empire and saw dramatic scenes of King Ashurbanipal hunting lions.
We also visited the Parthenon sculptures, including the famous scenes of Centaurs and Lapiths, which led to some excellent discussion about the continuing debate over whether the sculptures should remain in the British Museum or return to Greece. Finally, students saw the famous moai from Rapa Nui (Easter Island) — particularly topical with the renewed interest in Polynesian culture around Moana.
It was a brilliant day of History beyond the classroom, and the students were a credit to the school.
