Literacy Update – Celebrating a Love of Reading at AVA

As we reach the end of the first half-term, we're delighted to share how students and staff at Aylesbury Vale Academy have been celebrating reading and developing a love of books.
Reading Across the Academy
Reading remains an important part of school life, with regular opportunities for students to explore new books, develop their confidence and enjoy reading for pleasure.
-
Form Time Reading: Students enjoy dedicated reading time each week, providing an opportunity to discover new stories and immerse themselves in a good book.
-
Reading Mentoring: Our Year 7 and Year 11 students have been working together through reading mentoring sessions, building confidence, strengthening reading skills and encouraging a shared enjoyment of books.
Drop Everything and Read – World Mental Health Day
To mark World Mental Health Day, students and staff across the Academy took part in a special whole-school 'Drop Everything and Read' session.
Everyone was encouraged to take a break from their usual activities and enjoy some quiet reading time, highlighting the positive role reading can play in supporting wellbeing.
Keep Reading Over Half Term
The half-term holiday is a wonderful opportunity to explore new books and enjoy reading together as a family.
Here are two useful resources to help keep young readers inspired:
-
Aylesbury Library Events – Discover local library events and activities for children and families.
-
National Year of Reading – Go All In – Explore family-friendly ideas and resources to encourage reading for pleasure at home.
Thank you to our parents and carers for supporting our efforts to develop confident, enthusiastic readers.
We wish all our families an enjoyable half-term break and hope everyone finds time to enjoy a good book!
