Oxford University Union Debate Visit
On Thursday 11 June, a group of AVA Sixth Form students visited the University of Oxford to attend a debate hosted by the prestigious Oxford Union
The motion under discussion was: "This House Believes That Reform Is Fit to Govern." Students had the opportunity to hear arguments from both sides of the debate, including contributions from university students and Members of Parliament representing different political perspectives.
Speaking in favour of the motion were Benedict Masters, an Oxford student, and Andrew Rosindell MP, Reform UK's Member of Parliament for Romford. Opposing the motion were Oxford student Prajwal Pandley and Josh Babarinde OBE MP, Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Eastbourne.
The event provided a fascinating insight into political debate and democratic discussion, allowing students to engage with a range of viewpoints and arguments.
Reflecting on the experience, Megan W said:
"Whilst I might not have agreed with all political perspectives, I still believe it was necessary to listen to every perspective of the argument, not only for the sake of democratic freedom, but to understand where different political ideas come from and how they are sustained within society. Ignorance of certain beliefs and circumstances does not solve or aid the issue; it only strengthens the cause."
The visit was a valuable opportunity for students to experience one of the world's most renowned debating societies and to engage with contemporary political issues in an academic setting.
