Understanding Attitude to Learning Grades at AVA

On Thursday 8 October, we shared a letter with parents and carers explaining our Attitude to Learning (AtL) descriptors and how they are used in student reports.

At AVA, we believe that success is about more than academic achievement. Attitude to Learning reflects how students approach their learning, including their engagement, effort, response to feedback, independence, resilience and conduct.

Students receive one of five grades in each subject:

  • Outstanding Learner (1) – Consistently exceeds expectations and demonstrates exceptional independence and commitment.
  • Ambitious Learner (2) – Highly engaged, responds well to feedback and regularly goes beyond expectations.
  • Engaged Learner (3) – Consistently meets expectations and demonstrates positive learning behaviours. This is our benchmark grade.
  • Passive Learner (4) – Demonstrates inconsistent engagement or effort and may require additional support.
  • Reluctant Learner (5) – Frequently struggles to engage and falls below expected standards.

Importantly, Attitude to Learning is not a measure of academic attainment or personality. Grades may vary between subjects and are intended to help identify strengths and areas for development.

We encourage parents and carers to read the letter issued on 8 October and use these descriptors to support conversations with their children about positive learning habits and progress.
