The new Berryfields campus of the Aylesbury Vale Academy, including the new Berryfields C of E Primary School, was officially opened today by the Rt Hon David Liddington, MP and the Rt Revd. Dr Alan Wilson, the Bishop of Buckingham.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Oxford Diocese, the County and District Councils, and those involved with the design and construction of the new buildings; as well as headteachers of other local schools and members of the Berryfields and Aylesbury town communities.  The guests enjoyed a medley of songs by Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils from the primary school, as well as reflections of their first year at the Academy from Year 7 students and a tantalizing group tap-dance performance of Singing in the Rain by Sixth Form BTEC Dance students.

The new campus is helping to ensure that teaching and learning at the Academy makes use of the most up-to-date resources and technologies and has allowed the school to increase its capacity to 1,500.   The development of an on-site primary school and nursery not only provides places for families moving into new homes in Berryfields, but also means that children will be able to make a smooth transition from primary to secondary school with staff from across the academy working together to ensure that the curriculum and assessment dovetail together from one phase to the next so that the individual needs of every child are planned for and met.

The campus which, in addition to the primary and secondary schools, includes a children’s centre and extensive community facilities, cost £30 million and was funded by the Department for Education and Buckinghamshire County Council (through developer contributions from the Berryfields Consortium).

Both Academy Principal, Fiona Froment, and Berryfields Primary Headteacher, Jonathan Walker, were delighted with how the ceremony went.  Mrs Froment said, ‘The Academy buildings have been some years in the planning, but have really been worth waiting for.  We are thrilled with the result which provides a top class learning environment for our students right across the curriculum.’

Realisation of Hopes and Dreams made for a fitting theme for speeches given by Rev Wilson and Mr Liddington and each spoke on the subject, before officially commissioning plaques to commemorate the occasion.
