Thursday 5th March 2015

Thursday 5th of March was World Book Day – an event supported and adopted by schools and organisations around the globe. It promotes literacy by offering  children and young people a token which entitles them to receive a book  from a range of special free WBD titles or money off the price of another book of their  choice. Here at AVA we distributed hundreds of tokens to Year 7 and 8 students with many more made available for other years. The offer runs until the 29th March so it’s still not too late to collect a token from the library and exchange it for a book – in Aylesbury tokens are accepted at Waterstones, Friars Square; W.H. Smith, High Street and in Tesco, Broadfields.  To celebrate the day the academy library ran a “Shelfies” competition where members of staff provided photos of their home bookshelves and students had to guess which shelf belonged to who.

The winner of the competition was Reece Davis (Year 8, Faraday 1) who won a £20 book token – congratulations Reece! Teachers also put pictures of themselves reading a favourite book on their classroom door for the day to remind students that reading can be fun. My favourite was Mr Shaid reading a copy of his own book!
