Drowning Prevention Week Raises Awareness of Water Safety

Last week marked Drowning Prevention Week, a national campaign led by the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) to raise awareness of water safety ahead of the summer holidays.

The campaign highlighted the importance of helping young people understand the risks associated with water, particularly in open-water environments such as rivers, lakes and beaches. A key focus was the danger of cold water shock, which can occur even during warm weather when water temperatures remain unexpectedly low.

Throughout the week, families were encouraged to discuss water safety at home, including how to recognise hazards, where it is safe to swim, and what to do in an emergency. Simple messages such as swimming in supervised areas, respecting safety signage, and knowing how to float and call for help can make a significant difference.

As we approach the summer break, the campaign serves as a timely reminder that water safety awareness can help everyone enjoy the water safely and responsibly.
