On Thursday, 29th January, Year 9 participated in an interactive and entertaining workshop with careers advisors from the University of   Bedfordshire. The purpose of this workshop was to support and to aid the students through their options for their GCSEs.

During the afternoon sessions, students had to pretend they were stranded on a desert island and prioritise their actions and choose which resources they would need. This was a great task to emphasise the importance of prioritising time and also learning how to live and act independently.

The next activity was a competition to list how many different jobs and professions were related to a box of celebrations. Seemingly obvious at first, students then realised that there were a host of jobs and services involved like marketing and graphic design. This activity certainly got them thinking outside the box!

Finally, in the hall, students took part in an interactive questionnaire which sought to clear misconceptions about careers and stereotypes people have. One fact that took people by surprise was that celebrity Harry Hill has trained as a doctor in a previous life. This gave a       powerful message that gaining a profession and good qualifications were part of a bright future.

Students enjoyed the event with some stating in their evaluations that: “I feel that there are different professions I have learned about today that I haven’t considered before.”
