ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

English as an additional language (EAL) refers to learners whose first language is not English. The learner may already be fluent in several other languages or dialects.

Support includes the initial assessment of students from an EAL background, i.e. students who join this school and have arrived recently in this country and are not fluent speakers of English. Staff are informed so that the students can be catered for in lessons and further assessment is sought if appropriate.

Students have access to support in lessons and small group interventions to support their English language development and facilitate integration.

Students may be offered the opportunity to take a GCSE in their Home Language if available.
